Mike Favazza, MD, NHSC Scholar

I was a general pediatrician and NHSC scholar from Southern California, and I chose to serve my scholarship commitment here in American Samoa. I went to medical school in Los Angeles at USC-Keck School of Medicine, and I trained in pediatrics at Children's Hospital Oakland in the San Francisco Bay area of California. My interests within pediatric medicine include pediatric critical care and acute care, and LBJ afforded me the opportunity to do a little bit of everything.

Outside of medicine, I am a lifelong surfer and I enjoyed stand-up paddle-boarding both in the ocean and in the lagoon in my backyard.  I am a novice free-diver and if I could pull myself away from the waves I think I'd have done a lot more spearfishing, but there always seems to be surf somewhere...  I also loved all of the other outdoor activities, hiking, and waterfalls that American Samoa has to offer!

After my 4 year tenure at LBJ, I returned to my home state of California to pursue a career in pediatric critical care medicine in fellowship at UCLA. LBJ gave me experience and confidence that pointed me towards my ultimate career path and I will always remember the island, the people, and my time there very fondly!
